How to Taste Chinese Tea
Learn how to observe tea appearance and aroma
Tasting Chinese tea is not about finding the “right” answer. It is about slowing down and discovering what you enjoy.
A simple way to taste tea is to follow Look · Smell · Taste · Feel · Reflect.
1. Look
Observe the color, shape, and appearance of the tea leaves and tea liquor.
2. Smell
Bring the cup close and gently smell the tea. Notice whether the aroma is floral, fruity, roasted, woody, fresh, or sweet.
3. Taste
Take a small sip and let the tea move across your palate. Notice its sweetness, bitterness, freshness, and depth.
4. Feel
Pay attention to the texture of the tea. Is it light, smooth, rich, soft, or refreshing? Notice the aftertaste and how long it stays.
5. Taste Again
Chinese tea often changes with each infusion. Taste the next brew and see what is different.
There is no single correct way to describe a tea. Your own senses and experience are part of the journey.
Slow down. Taste carefully. Let the tea speak for itself.
